Possibility of Evil Summary
The short story "The Possibility of Evil" by Shirley Jackson takes places in a small town during summertime. It tells the story of Ms. Strangeworth, a rather proper woman who is well known all around town. Ms. Strangeworth is a well respected person. She lives in a house that her grandfather built when the town was made. She has very good relationships with all the people that live in her town and knows everyone and what is going on in the town. The most important thing to her is her roses. She has them all over her house. However, nobody knows that she has a secret that she has been keeping. In her house she has a narrow desk engraved with "Strangeworth House" on it. Almost every day she goes to her desk, unlocks the drawer and pulls out a pad of paper. The paper she had is in all different colors and many people use it for odd things like shopping lists, notes, recipes and had matching envelopes. She pulls out a colored paper and starts to write letters to different people in town using a pencil, in a childish writing. She writes about things that people don't notice. She mails them to different people such as Mr. Crane, Mrs. Harper, and Mrs. Foster without signing it. Once she mailed the letters, but one letter didn't go through the slot. The Harris boy and Linda Stewart, two teenagers, found the letter and tried to tell Mrs. Strangeworth, but instead delivered it to the addressed person. The next morning, Mrs. Strangeworth had received mail and in that pile she had gotten back one of the letters she had written. Inside it said, "Look out at what used to be your roses." This teaches Ms. Strange worth that gossip always leads to trouble and that she shouldn't be in everyone's business. 20 Facts About Gary Soto |

They must fight against the sixth person in order to achieve that goal. First of in the short story, it starts out with five friends who come out of a house, one by one. People notice them and they stated that since then they've been living with each other. Then a another person comes along and wants to be a sixth one. There lives would have gone smoothly if it wasn't for him. The "sixth" one doesn't' do anything to them, but he annoys them. They all agreed that they wouldn't let another person into their group. They have also gone through old experiences that they did not describe. If they sit down with the sixth one and explain that all to him, it would lead to accepting him into the group. That's why they don't even bother explaining. So no matter how much they push him away, he always comes back.
