This week, our class worked on simple, progressive, and Perfect tenses. Personally, I sometimes struggle with this, but I actually understood what was going on. Verb forms indicate tense, or the time of action. Simple tense has past present, and future. Progressive tense has auxiliary verb "be" and present participle. An example for present progressive is, Alyssa is studying Italian. An example for past progressive is, Alyssa was studying Italian. Finally, an example for future progressive is, Alyssa will be studying Italian. Now come perfect tenses. Perfect tenses include have and past participle. An example for present tense is, I have read the book on Venice. An example for past perfect is I have read the book before my trip. Finally, an example for future perfect is I will have read the book before I leave. In perfect tenses, the passive voice is formed by inserting been. The progressive forms of perfect tenses indicate ongoing actions. An example is, I have been planning for months. Our class also learned Indicative, imperative, and emphatic moods. Verb forms are also indicative mood. The four moods are subjunctive. Indicative mood is stating a fact or asking a question. An example is, We are working on a project together. Another example is, Have you ever painted a t-shirt? Imperative mood is giving commands. An example is, Plan your design carefully. For a negative tone, add don't. Emphatic mood is giving force or emphasis to a simple present or past tense verb. Make sure to add do or does. An example is I do like our idea. These two lessons are very interesting and they seemed very interesting.

On May twenty-fourth, Donald Trump will visit the Pope at the Vatican. The Vatican announced today that Donald Trump will visit him. He will also talk with other members as well. During his visit there, he will go to Israel and Saudi Arabia. After going there, he will attend a meeting in Brussels. According to catholic agency news, the pope and the president haven't always been getting along. In February, the pope said that those who build wall aren't Christian. A week later, Donald Trump said the pope is a “pawn” for the Mexican government and “a very political person” who does not understand what the United States is going through. I feel like that it is good that the Pope and the President are going to meet. There are many issues going on right now. The President can fill the Pope in about the problems in the United States and the Pope can offer his advice. Besides, as Catholics, when we go into politics, we have to do the right thing. For example, if we’re talking about abortion, the catholic view would be that it’s against what we believe. Donald Trump is against abortion and as Catholics we don’t believe in it. Maybe if they work together, they might come up with something to stop a certain problem. God knows why these things happen. You never know, it might be the start of something amazing. Maybe the Pope meeting the President will help the United States and the world. This week, our class watched a video called "One Survivor Remembers". It is about a woman named Gerda Wiessmann who goes through the terrible times of the Holocaust. She was fifteen and she came home from a vacation in August 1939. In September, World War II started and in a few hours the Germans took over her hometown. Soon after, there came orders that men had to register for forced labor and that included her brother. She said her brother was her protector and that she loved him very much. When he left it was very hard for her. Next came her dad. The Jews were forced to consecration camps. His dad had to go and then it was just her mom and her. Then the Jewish women and their children were also deported. When the German's asked for their ages, Gerda and her mom were separated. She never saw her mother again. On the train to the camp, she met a girl named Suse Kunz and they made a bet for how long the war was going to be. The bet was for a quart of strawberries and some whipped cream. The thing that made me feel really bad was her saying that they had finally had been liberated. Suse Kunz was still alive and Gerda had lost the bet so she had to give her strawberries. When Suse went to go get water, she fainted and died. A good thing I thought was cool was that she married a Jewish solider that came to come get them after they had been liberated. Gerda had to go through many things in her life, but during it all she stayed strong. This week has been filled with assignments and homework, but the one that stuck out the most was our SLE's. We turned in our first draft on Thursday. My SLE is about Faith in Society. There are some many negative things going on in the world and it blinds us from seeing God and coming to know him. The world is filled with darkness and it can lead us to make wrong choices. For example, the talk we had with Helen Rossi went with my topic as well. There was a lady named Kate that went with her as well. She divide the white board into two. On one side was God and the other side was World. For a big portion of her life, she lived on the side that side world. She lived in darkness and sin. She made wrong choices and it made her life more difficult. She eventually found the side with God on it and her life became better. In my essay I also include how we can be the light of the world. Since there is so much darkness in the world, God calls us to be lights of the world. As an example, I used St. Teresa as an example in my essay. I said that St. Teresa was well-known throughout the world and that she brought light into the world. She might have even changed the lives of others. I also used St. Francis of Assisi in my essay as well. He lived on the dark side for awhile until he noticed that he needed God in his life. He was really humble and many people thought he was a really holy person and they eventually joined him. In his prayer it says that when there's doubt, faith. It means that whenever you think something's wrong, turn to God because you'll find the way. SLEs are actually pretty interesting and it actually helps me deepen my faith and come to know God more. Ivanka Trump will be taking a job in the White House from now on. She is an unpaid employee who will now have an office in the West Wing. Ivanka will be the assistant to the president along with her husband who is a senior adviser to the president. Some people were concerned about somethings since she would be the President's assistant. She spoke about the topic yesterday. She sated that she's going to work as an unpaid employee and will follow the same rules as everyone else in the White Hose. Donald Trump said that instead of paying her, he would make a monthly paycheck and donate the money to charity. From now on Ivanka Trump will continue to offer advice to her father. Ivanka Trump is also involved in the STEM program with Secretary Betsy DeVos along with four-hundred fifty high school students. She is doing this in commemoration of Women's History Month. Ivanka is also planning to take a trip to Germany because she is going to attend a meeting/conference for the empowerment of women. She was invited by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Ivanka met a women called Maria Martinez. She is the founder and CEO of Respira Inc. It is a company that provides clinical respiratory and sleep services. The company started out as a home for women of domestic violence. She wanted her company to support people who are suffering from respiratory systems like her father. Ivanka is really accomplish and it's no wonder why she would be a perfect fit as Donald Trump's assistant. Our class this week finished writing the notes for the principal part of verbs on Tuesday. Verbs show action or state of being (“be” is a to be verb). An example of a verb in a sentence is: We read several Mexican folktales. The verb would be read because it is what the subject is doing. The verb is an action. Another example is: Folktales are traditional stories of people. The verb is are and it is a stated of being. There are two different types of verbs. They are regular and irregular verbs. They can be changed into base, past, past participle, and present participle. Base is the regular form of the verb without changing anything. Past is adding –ed or –d. Past participle is adding have or had in front of the past form of the verb. Present participle is adding –ing to the verb. An example of a regular verb is talk. The base for it is talk. The past form is talked. The past participle is have or had talked. Lastly, the present participle is talking. Another example for a regular verb is walk. The base is walk. The past is walked. The past participle is have or had walked. Finally, the present participle is walking. An example for irregular verbs is eat. The base is eat. The past form is ate. The past participle is have or had eaten. The last one is present participle, which is eating. Next, we move onto verb phrases. A verb phrase is two or more verbs that work together as a unit. A verb phrase may have one or more auxiliary verbs and main verbs. Some auxiliary verbs are be and have and all the forms. Other examples would be do, did, can, may, might, should, could, and will. This lesson was very interesting and I liked regular verbs better. Right now in South Sudan there are a lot of people who are starving right now. They are saying that there is a famine going on over there. Many Africans are starving and they really need food. Many farmers have lost their livestock, they've sold their tools and they've eaten all their crops. They have nothing left and they also have money as well. The U.N. Children's Fund said that more that one million children are currently estimated to be acutely malnourished across South Sudan; over a quarter of a million children are already severely malnourished. If we do not reach these children with urgent aid many of them will die. South Sudan, the world’s newest nation – just over five years old – has been struggling to survive since its birth. Not only is it one of the very poorest countries on earth, it has also suffered during most of its short life from an ongoing civil war.The South Sudanese bishops then note that while poor rains have affected parts of the country, the famine is man-made. And with deep insight they say, Hunger, in turn, creates insecurity, in a vicious circle in which the hungry man, especially if he has a gun, may resort to looting to feed himself and his family. Since war is fueling the famine, also ask your congressional delegation to urge President Trump to request that the U.N. Security Council impose a total arms embargo on South Sudan and actively attempt to negotiate a permanent cease fire. Since we are in the season of Lent, we have to fast, pray, and alms give. We need to give at least a small donation to the poor so they can at least get something to eat. On Tuesday, our class did the Mock Trial on the short story the “Tale Tell Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe. I was on the jury and we had to decide whether the defendant was guilty or not. The defendant was played by Aidan Reynolds who did a good job acting as a psychopath. On the defendant team was Emily, Xavier, Danny, Tyler, Davin, Alex and Ela. On the prosecution team it was Kiana, Jeanette, Adrian, Jared, and Daniel. On the jury was Adi, Isabella, Melanie, Jeremiah, Fatima, Isaac, Skye, Gaby, Kyle, Derryl, Diego, Gavin, and me. The witnesses were Chelsea, Ryan, Karissa, and Sophie M. They first started with the opening statement. After they started to question the witnesses. The case was really interesting and I was impressed on how both sides presented their evidence. There was one mishap though. The defense team used really good questions to ask the witnesses and they had good evidence. The prosecution side had good evidence too, but I feel they could have reworded their questions. What was positive about the prosecution team was that when they questioned the defendant, they made the defendant get confused and it was amazing. I really liked the closing statement on the defense team because the finished it off with one final question, “Are you killing a man for something out of his control?” That question made me think that well that’s true because one of the witnesses was Dr. Sophie Mena who is psychologist and she said he is a psychopath. At the end the jury went outside and we decided that the defendant was innocent. There was one slight mishap though. Adi who was on the jury said he was guilty. Overall I thought that the mock trial was a great experience and that I might want to do it again. On Monday, our class learned about Ethos Pathos and Logos in our English class. Ethos, Pathos, and Logos are powers of persuasion. They are rhetorical strategies that all of us use every single day. A commercial that I thought was pretty persuasive was the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital commercial. They should little kids that had cancer and how much they suffered. At the end of the commercial they said that we should donate at least ten cents a day to help these children. The commercial was so persuasive that it made me want to donate. Rhetoric is the art of Persuasion. The history of rhetoric and the concepts of ethos, pathos, and logos began in Greece. Aristotle was a famous Greek philosopher who studied the art of persuasion. Ethos equals ethical or moral. Ethos is the author or creator’s credibility, believability, and/or likeability. It can come from inside the text (intrinsic) or outside the text (extrinsic). The speaker or writer must demonstrate credibility to the audience to be persuasive. Some English words to know are ethical and ethics. Pathos equals feeling. Pathos are stories, scenarios, or statements designed to create an emotional response. You accept a claim based on how it makes you accept a claim based on how it makes you feel, without fully analyzing how valid the claims. Fear, love, patriotism, hatred, joy, humor, and guilt are ways of persuasion. The use of pathos can be extremely effective and also manipulative. Some English words to no empathy, sympathy, pathetic, and antipathy. Logos equals logic or reason. Logos refers to any attempt to appeal to the intellect. Logos appeals to the left side of our brain. We find certain patterns, conventions, and methods reasoning and persuasive. Numbers, polls, facts, and statistics are also is it examples of the persuasive use of logic. Some English words to know are logic and logical. Effective persuasion uses all three kinds of appeals. Ethos, pathos, and logos are powers of persuasion. It has just been snowing and snowing in the northeast. The snow has been nonstop in New York and Boston. Many people have been snowed in imagine beingjng snowed in and and your powers out and its freezing cold. A lot of flights and public schools were canceled. The snowstorms has caused many thing to happen. The police has responded to multiple of calls such as car crashes. The snowstorms have even been deadly. One man who was a door man, was shoveling the steps when he slipped and fell right through a glass window. That is pretty bad so we should be careful where we're walking. More than 3,800 flights were canceled and all public schools in New York City, Boston and Philadelphia were closed today. Winter storm warnings are in effect for Boston and New York. Boston should get about a foot of snow, with Springfield and Fitchburg, also in Massachusetts, seeing a few inches less. The good news is that the storm is expected to move out quickly. This is awful and another death that happened because of the heavy winds was in Virginia when it pushed a huge truck into the water and it killed the driver. There was also a house on fire which killed one person. Fifty million people from Maine down through Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., are being affected by a winter storm that dumped as much as four inches of snow per hour. The snow is like putting a big heavy white blanket on top of your house and city. The snow might be pretty, but it's not all what it seems. People can't travel to visit there family members or on a business trip. Just make sure to drive safe and avoid speeding. |
